Margin Questions

Q1. What is Science?

Answer:

Science is a way of thinking, observing, and doing things to understand the world we live in and to uncover the secrets of the universe. It involves asking questions, exploring, and trying to understand how things work — driven above all by curiosity.

Q2. What will we explore with the help of this book?

Answer:

The book will explore:
  • Planet Earth and the life on it (plants and animals)
  • Food, water and its states (ice, water, steam)
  • Everyday materials (paper, metal, plastic, rubber, magnets)
  • Heat and temperature
  • Things beyond Earth like the Sun, Moon, and stars

Q3. How can we try to find answers to our questions on our own?

Answer:

By following the scientific method:
  • Observe something interesting
  • Ask a question about it
  • Make a guess (hypothesis)
  • Test the guess through experiments/observations
  • Analyse the results to see if they answer the question

Activity 1.1: Let us think and write

Q1. Write about a similar problem that you tried to solve.

Answer:

My bicycle bell stopped ringing. I wondered why it wasn't working. I guessed the spring inside might be loose or the button was stuck.

Q2. What steps did you take?

Answer:

  • Observation: Pressed the button a few times to check
  • Guess: The spring might be jammed
  • Test: Opened the bell cover to check, found dust jammed inside
  • Result: Cleaned it out and tested the bell again — it worked, confirming my guess

Activity 1.2: Let us think and write

Q1. Describe a daily life situation where you think someone was following a scientific method.

Answer:

A cook noticed the dal boiling over from a pressure cooker.
  • Observation: Dal boiling over from the pressure cooker
  • Question: She wondered why
  • Hypothesis: She guessed there was too much water or the flame was too high
  • Test: She reduced the water and lowered the flame next time
  • Analysis of result: The dal cooked properly without spilling, confirming her guess
Other examples given in the book itself: a bicycle repair person figuring out why a tyre is flat, or an electrician figuring out why a bulb isn't working.

Activity 1.3: Let us think and write

Q1. If you have to ask "Why?" about something, what would you ask about?

Answer:

Why does the sky appear blue during the day and red/orange at sunset?

Q2. Try to write down how you would attempt to find an answer to your question.

Answer:

  • Observe: The sky's colour at different times of day
  • Question: Why does the colour change?
  • Guess: It might have to do with sunlight and how it travels through air
  • Test: Read about how sunlight is made of different colours and how the atmosphere scatters them (or ask a teacher/do further research)
  • Analyse: Check if the explanation (scattering of shorter blue wavelengths by air) matches what is observed
