EXERCISE 12.1

Q1. 2 cubes each of volume 64 cm³ are joined end to end. Find the surface area of the resulting cuboid.

Answer:

Let side of each cube = a cm. Volume = a³ = 64 ⇒ a = 4 cm. When joined end to end, resulting cuboid has length = 4+4 = 8 cm, breadth = 4 cm, height = 4 cm. Surface area = 2(lb + bh + hl) = 2(8×4 + 4×4 + 4×8) = 2(32+16+32) = 2×80 = 160 cm².

Q2. A vessel is in the form of a hollow hemisphere mounted by a hollow cylinder. The diameter of the hemisphere is 14 cm and the total height of the vessel is 13 cm. Find the inner surface area of the vessel.

Answer:

Radius r = 14/2 = 7 cm. Height of cylinder = total height - radius of hemisphere = 13 - 7 = 6 cm. Inner surface area = CSA of hemisphere + CSA of cylinder = 2πr² + 2πrh = 2πr(r+h) = 2×(22/7)×7×(7+6) = 44×13 = 572 cm².

Q3. A toy is in the form of a cone of radius 3.5 cm mounted on a hemisphere of same radius. The total height of the toy is 15.5 cm. Find the total surface area of the toy.

Answer:

Radius r = 3.5 cm. Height of cone = total height - r = 15.5 - 3.5 = 12 cm. Slant height l = √(r² + h²) = √(3.5² + 12²) = √(12.25 + 144) = √156.25 = 12.5 cm. TSA = CSA of hemisphere + CSA of cone = 2πr² + πrl = πr(2r + l) = (22/7)×3.5×(7+12.5) = 11×19.5 = 214.5 cm².

Q4. A cubical block of side 7 cm is surmounted by a hemisphere. What is the greatest diameter the hemisphere can have? Find the surface area of the solid.

Answer:

Greatest diameter of hemisphere = side of cube = 7 cm, so radius r = 3.5 cm. Surface area = TSA of cube - base area of hemisphere + CSA of hemisphere = 6×7² - πr² + 2πr² = 294 + πr² = 294 + (22/7)×(3.5)² = 294 + 38.5 = 332.5 cm².

Q5. A hemispherical depression is cut out from one face of a cubical wooden block such that the diameter l of the hemisphere is equal to the edge of the cube. Determine the surface area of the remaining solid.

Answer:

Let edge of cube = a, so radius of hemisphere = a/2. Surface area = TSA of cube - area of circle + CSA of hemisphere = 6a² - π(a/2)² + 2π(a/2)² = 6a² + π(a/2)² = 6a² + (πa²)/4 = (24a² + πa²)/4 = a²(24+π)/4.

Q6. A medicine capsule is in the shape of a cylinder with two hemispheres stuck to each of its ends. The length of the entire capsule is 14 mm and the diameter of the capsule is 5 mm. Find its surface area.

Answer:

Radius r = 5/2 = 2.5 mm. Height of cylinder = total length - 2r = 14 - 5 = 9 mm. Surface area = CSA of cylinder + 2×CSA of hemisphere = 2πrh + 2×2πr² = 2πr(h + 2r) = 2×(22/7)×2.5×(9+5) = (110/7)×14 = 220 mm².

Q7. A tent is in the shape of a cylinder surmounted by a conical top. If the height and diameter of the cylindrical part are 2.1 m and 4 m respectively, and the slant height of the top is 2.8 m, find the area of the canvas used for making the tent. Also, find the cost of the canvas of the tent at the rate of ₹ 500 per m². (Note that the base of the tent will not be covered with canvas.)

Answer:

Radius r = 4/2 = 2 m. Height of cylinder h = 2.1 m. Slant height of cone l = 2.8 m. Canvas area = CSA of cylinder + CSA of cone = 2πrh + πrl = πr(2h+l) = (22/7)×2×(4.2+2.8) = (44/7)×7 = 44 m². Cost = 44 × 500 = ₹ 22,000.

Q8. From a solid cylinder whose height is 2.4 cm and diameter 1.4 cm, a conical cavity of the same height and same diameter is hollowed out. Find the total surface area of the remaining solid to the nearest cm².

Answer:

Radius r = 1.4/2 = 0.7 cm. Height h = 2.4 cm. Slant height of cone l = √(r² + h²) = √(0.49 + 5.76) = √6.25 = 2.5 cm. TSA of remaining solid = CSA of cylinder + area of top base + CSA of cone = 2πrh + πr² + πrl = πr(2h + r + l) = (22/7)×0.7×(4.8+0.7+2.5) = 2.2×8 = 17.6 ≈ 18 cm².

Q9. A wooden article was made by scooping out a hemisphere from each end of a solid cylinder, as shown in Fig. 12.11. If the height of the cylinder is 10 cm, and its base is of radius 3.5 cm, find the total surface area of the article.

Answer:

Radius r = 3.5 cm, height h = 10 cm. TSA = CSA of cylinder + 2×CSA of hemisphere = 2πrh + 2×2πr² = 2πr(h + 2r) = 2×(22/7)×3.5×(10+7) = 22×17 = 374 cm².

Exercises

Q1. 2 cubes each of volume 64 cm³ are joined end to end. Find the surface area of the resulting cuboid.

Answer:

Volume of each cube = 64 cm³. Side of each cube = ∛64 = 4 cm. When joined end to end, the resulting cuboid has length = 4 + 4 = 8 cm, breadth = 4 cm, height = 4 cm. Surface area = 2(lb + bh + hl) = 2(8×4 + 4×4 + 4×8) = 2(32 + 16 + 32) = 2×80 = 160 cm².

Q2. A vessel is in the form of a hollow hemisphere mounted by a hollow cylinder. The diameter of the hemisphere is 14 cm and the total height of the vessel is 13 cm. Find the inner surface area of the vessel.

Answer:

Radius of hemisphere = 14/2 = 7 cm. Height of cylinder = total height - radius of hemisphere = 13 - 7 = 6 cm. Inner surface area = CSA of cylinder + CSA of hemisphere = 2πrh + 2πr² = 2πr(h + r) = 2×(22/7)×7×(6 + 7) = 2×22×13 = 572 cm².

Q3. A toy is in the form of a cone of radius 3.5 cm mounted on a hemisphere of same radius. The total height of the toy is 15.5 cm. Find the total surface area of the toy.

Answer:

Radius = 3.5 cm. Height of cone = total height - radius of hemisphere = 15.5 - 3.5 = 12 cm. Slant height of cone = √(r² + h²) = √(3.5² + 12²) = √(12.25 + 144) = √156.25 = 12.5 cm. Total surface area = CSA of cone + CSA of hemisphere = πrl + 2πr² = πr(l + 2r) = (22/7)×3.5×(12.5 + 7) = 11×19.5 = 214.5 cm².

Q4. A cubical block of side 7 cm is surmounted by a hemisphere. What is the greatest diameter the hemisphere can have? Find the surface area of the solid.

Answer:

Greatest diameter of hemisphere = side of cube = 7 cm, so radius = 3.5 cm. Surface area = total surface area of cube - area of base of hemisphere + CSA of hemisphere = 6×7² - πr² + 2πr² = 294 + πr² = 294 + (22/7)×(3.5)² = 294 + 38.5 = 332.5 cm².

Q5. A hemispherical depression is cut out from one face of a cubical wooden block such that the diameter l of the hemisphere is equal to the edge of the cube. Determine the surface area of the remaining solid.

Answer:

Edge of cube = l, so radius of hemisphere = l/2. Remaining surface area = TSA of cube - area of circle (base of hemisphere) + CSA of hemisphere = 6l² - π(l/2)² + 2π(l/2)² = 6l² + π(l/2)² = 6l² + (πl²)/4 = l²(6 + π/4) = (l²(24 + π))/4.

Radius = 1 cm. Height of cone = 1 cm. Volume of cone = (1/3)πr²h = (1/3)π×1×1 = π/3 cm³. Volume of hemisphere = (2/3)πr³ = (2/3)π×1 = 2π/3 cm³. Total volume = π/3 + 2π/3 = π cm³.

Q2. Rachel, an engineering student, was asked to make a model shaped like a cylinder with two cones attached at its two ends by using a thin aluminium sheet. The diameter of the model is 3 cm and its length is 12 cm. If each cone has a height of 2 cm, find the volume of air contained in the model that Rachel made. (Assume the outer and inner dimensions of the model to be nearly the same.)

Answer:

Radius = 3/2 = 1.5 cm. Height of cylinder = total length - 2×height of cone = 12 - 4 = 8 cm. Volume of cylinder = πr²h = π×(1.5)²×8 = 18π cm³. Volume of each cone = (1/3)πr²h = (1/3)π×(1.5)²×2 = 1.5π cm³. Volume of two cones = 3π cm³. Total volume = 18π + 3π = 21π = 66 cm³ (using π = 22/7: 21×22/7 = 66).

Q3. A gulab jamun, contains sugar syrup up to about 30% of its volume. Find approximately how much syrup would be found in 45 gulab jamuns, each shaped like a cylinder with two hemispherical ends with length 5 cm and diameter 2.8 cm.

Answer:

Radius = 2.8/2 = 1.4 cm. Length of cylindrical part = total length - 2×radius = 5 - 2.8 = 2.2 cm. Volume of one gulab jamun = volume of cylinder + 2×volume of hemisphere = πr²h + 2×(2/3)πr³ = πr²(h + 4r/3) = (22/7)×(1.4)²×(2.2 + 5.6/3) = (22/7)×1.96×(2.2 + 1.8667) = 6.16×4.0667 ≈ 25.05 cm³. Syrup in one = 30% of 25.05 = 7.515 cm³. Syrup in 45 = 45×7.515 ≈ 338.18 cm³.
