These India location, size and extent notes for OPSC/UPSC cover latitudinal and longitudinal extent, the Tropic of Cancer, the Standard Meridian and IST, area and rank, land and sea boundaries, neighbours, islands and the strategic value of India's location. For OAS prelims the chapter yields direct fact questions on extreme points, states crossed by lines, borders and channels, and for mains it supports answers on geopolitics, the Indian Ocean and time-zone debates, with a clear Odisha link.
India Location and Extent: Latitude and Longitude
India lies wholly in the northern and eastern hemispheres, in the south-central part of Asia, with the Indian Ocean to the south, the Arabian Sea to the west and the Bay of Bengal to the east.
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Latitudinal extent (mainland) | 8°4′N to 37°6′N |
| Longitudinal extent | 68°7′E to 97°25′E |
| North-south extent | about 3,214 km |
| East-west extent | about 2,933 km |
| Total area | about 3.28 million sq km (32.87 lakh sq km), 2.4 per cent of the world's land area |
| Rank by area | Seventh, after Russia, Canada, China, USA, Brazil and Australia |
| Land frontier | about 15,100 km |
| Coastline (mainland and islands) | about 7,516 km |
| Administrative units | 28 states and 8 Union Territories |
India holds about 2.4 per cent of the world's land area but roughly 17.5 per cent of its population. The north-south extent is greater than the east-west extent, yet the longitudinal difference of about 29 degrees causes a time difference of nearly two hours between Arunachal Pradesh and Gujarat.
Extreme Points of India
| Direction | Point | Location |
|---|---|---|
| North | Indira Col | Siachen area, Ladakh |
| South (mainland) | Kanyakumari | Tamil Nadu |
| South (whole territory) | Indira Point | Great Nicobar |
| East | Kibithu | Arunachal Pradesh |
| West | Guhar Moti | Kutch, Gujarat |
- Kanyakumari is the southern tip of the mainland, but Indira Point in Great Nicobar is the southernmost point of Indian territory.
- India is the seventh, not the fifth, largest country by area.
- The mainland extends to 8°4′N; the 6°45′N figure belongs to Indira Point.

Tropic of Cancer in India: States and Cities
The Tropic of Cancer (23°30′N) divides India into almost two equal parts: the southern half is tropical and the northern half is sub-tropical or temperate. It passes through eight states, from west to east: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram.
Towns near the line include Gandhinagar, Ujjain, Jabalpur and Ranchi. Kolkata (about 22°34′N) is the nearest large city among Delhi, Kolkata, Jodhpur and Nagpur. Manipur lies wholly north of the line, while Odisha lies wholly south of it.
- Bihar and Odisha are not crossed by the Tropic of Cancer.
- Sikkim shares its latitude (27°N to 28°N) with Rajasthan, not with Punjab or Himachal Pradesh.
- Jaisalmer lies at about 70°55′E, so 70°E is linked with it in exam keys.
Indian Standard Time and Standard Meridian
The Standard Meridian is 82°30′E, chosen because it lies close to the middle of India's longitudinal extent. It passes near Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, and the time is reckoned from the clock at Naini, Prayagraj. IST is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT, since every 15 degrees of longitude equals one hour (82°30′ divided by 15 gives 5.5). The meridian crosses Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, and Rewa is the nearest of the usual exam cities.
Time questions ask the local time east or west of 82°30′E. Remember that places to the east are ahead. Latitude questions on day length ask which place has the longest June day: the northernmost, since days lengthen with latitude in the northern summer.
Time Zones Debate
The two-hour gap between the east and west of the country means early sunrise and wasted daylight in the north-east. Tea gardens in Assam follow an informal 'tea garden time' one hour ahead of IST. Proposals for two time zones were considered by expert committees, but the government has retained a single IST, citing risks of confusion in railways and aviation.
India Borders and Neighbours
Land Boundaries
| Neighbour | Approx. length (km) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Bangladesh | 4,096 | Longest; borders West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram |
| China | 3,488 | Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh; McMahon Line in the east |
| Pakistan | 3,323 | Radcliffe Line (1947), a superimposed boundary |
| Nepal | 1,751 | Open border |
| Myanmar | 1,643 | Arunachal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram |
| Bhutan | 699 | Treaty relationship |
| Afghanistan | about 106 | Through Pakistan-occupied territory; Durand Line (1893) marks the Afghanistan-Pakistan line |
Sri Lanka and the Maldives are maritime neighbours, separated by the Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar, and the Eight Degree Channel. Manipur borders Myanmar, not Bangladesh, and Nagaland borders Myanmar, not China.
Boundary Lines
- Radcliffe Line: India-Pakistan, announced 17 August 1947.
- McMahon Line: India-China eastern sector, from the 1914 Simla Convention.
- Durand Line: Afghanistan-Pakistan, 1893.
- Sir Creek: a tidal estuary in the Rann of Kutch, disputed with Pakistan.
The Siliguri Corridor in northern West Bengal, a narrow strip between Nepal and Bangladesh, links the north-east with the rest of India.
Maritime Zones
Under the Maritime Zones of India Act, 1976, territorial waters extend 12 nautical miles, the contiguous zone 24 nautical miles and the Exclusive Economic Zone 200 nautical miles from the baseline.
Islands and Channels of India
| Channel | Separates |
|---|---|
| Ten Degree Channel (10°N) | Andaman and Nicobar groups |
| Nine Degree Channel (9°N) | Minicoy from the main Lakshadweep (Laccadive) group |
| Eight Degree Channel (8°N) | Minicoy (India) from the Maldives |
| Duncan Passage | South Andaman and Little Andaman |
| Palk Strait | Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka |
Great Nicobar is only about 150 km from Sumatra and lies close to the Strait of Malacca, which gives India a strategic reach into South-East Asia. Kanyakumari is where the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean meet. The Zero Mile Stone at Nagpur (1907) marks the geographic centre of the country.

Strategic Significance of India's Location: Mains Dimension
India sits at the head of the Indian Ocean, astride the sea lanes connecting the Persian Gulf, the Suez Canal and the Strait of Malacca. This central position, a long coastline and island territories give India a role in energy security and trade, while the Himalayan arc in the north shapes defence planning and river systems.
- Maritime advantage: the Andaman and Nicobar Command oversees approaches to the Malacca Strait, one of the world's busiest chokepoints.
- Land-bridge to the east: the north-east links to South-East Asia, reflected in the Act East Policy and in connectivity projects.
- Border management: a land frontier of about 15,100 km runs across deserts, mountains, rivers and marshes. Disputes with Pakistan and China, and the porous boundary with Bangladesh and Myanmar, require continuing border management.
- Climate: the Tropic of Cancer and the Himalayan barrier decide monsoon patterns and climatic diversity.
Likely Mains Questions

Odisha Angle: Odisha's Location and Extent
Odisha lies between about 17°49′N and 22°34′N latitude and about 81°27′E and 87°29′E longitude, entirely south of the Tropic of Cancer. The IST meridian passes through the state. It borders West Bengal (north-east), Jharkhand (north), Chhattisgarh (west) and Andhra Pradesh (south), with the Bay of Bengal on the east.
- The coastline of about 480 km offers ports such as Paradip and Dhamra, linking the hinterland minerals to the Bay of Bengal.
- The state's location on the eastern seaboard places it on the route of Act East connectivity and the East Coast road and rail corridors.
- Its tropical location exposes it to cyclones, which is why disaster preparedness is central in coastal districts.
Paradip port in Jagatsinghpur district handles bulk cargo such as coal and iron ore, showing how a coastal location turns mineral wealth into trade.
